In the 1990s, the introduction of a carbide insert blade for snowplow cutting edges was recognized as a major technological advancement for the wear parts industry. Carbide demonstrated the wear longevity to be seven times greater than a traditional hardened steel snowplow blade.

While carbide represented a significant advancement, there remained the need to use a traditional cover blade to protect the car-bide inserts that would experience an initial, significant and direct impact. While the carbide longevity was an improvement, requiring two blades represented safety challenges for the installation by workers and additional stress on the truck assembly and plow frame.

Fast-forward to November 2020 when Evolution Edges announced a revolutionary one-of-a-kind solution to eliminate the traditional full-size steel cover blade, and did this by acquiring the patented Sabre® Blade System created by Built Blades LLC of Fairport, N.Y. For the first time in 30 years, the Sabre® design has created significant advancements for customers looking to improve carbide cutting edge performance. Below are Sabre’s safety, economic and functional advantages:

  • Offered on national cooperative agreements, such as NASPO and Sourcewell.
  • First manufacturer ever to use Hardox® steel in the cutting edge industry.
  • Hardox is two times more abrasion-resistant and three times more impact-resistant.
  • A Sabre blade is 40% lighter per foot to reduce work-related injuries.
  • Utilizes a 18% thinner blade surface contact, resulting in better scraping.
  • Wear indicators every inch across the blade allow for rapid visual assessment.
  • Multiple state departments of transportation evaluations demonstrate a three times greater longevity versus carbide.

Evolution Edges, located in Elmira, N.Y., opened its doors in 2009 as a division of Chemung Supply Corporation — a municipal distribution supplier that has been in operation for 90 years now. Chemung Supply President Marc Stemerman created the snowplow wear parts manufacturing division in response to following industry needs:

  • To simplify and streamline the snowplow wear parts ordering process.
  • To ensure high-quality products be delivered with rapid response.
  • To be the authority of quality and innovative snowplow cutting edges.
  • Evolution Edges has six patents pending or in existence, and along with Built Blades, both companies represent many rapid, new innovations via shared patents.

“We are confident that adding Built Blades to our portfolio will be a mutually beneficial acquisition for both companies’ customer base. Adding Built Blades products to the products offered by Evolution Edges will create a much broader product offering and the means to serve our municipal customers more effectively now and moving for-ward,” stated Stemerman.

Built Blades created the Sabre® armored carbide snowplow blade in 2016, and it has been awarded both a fully issued utility patent and a registered trademark. It is currently being used in 29 snow states across the USA, which demonstrates its worthiness in diverse climates for snowplow applications.

“Delivery of an affordable, innovative and quality snowplow wear parts portfolio in a rapid and efficient manner to the customer is our goal. The acquisition of Built Blades demonstrates our ongoing focus to improve snowplow cutting edge technology,” said Stemerman.

Our factory is currently able to produce products at full capacity to support orders and is prepared to help with yours.

Wright Trailers has been selling and manufacturing equipment trailers in Southeastern Massachusetts since 1984. A third generation company started by the owner Dan Wright, after his retirement Dan's son Steven took over the company's day-to-day operations. Wright Trailers specializes in building trailers to a higher standard than the industry. These are trailers made to work and be worked, unlike the cookie-cutter mass produced models sold by their competitors. Wright Trailers also build one-off custom trailers to fit any need including platforms for the popular Tiny Homes, and also trailers to move portable restrooms.

During the winter months when the trailer industry is slow, Wright Trailers sells and services snow and ice control equipment. They are a factory-direct dealer for both BOSS Snowplows and Fisher Snowplows and carry Evolution Edges snow plow wear parts.

"With great pricing, reasonable turn around times, and customer service that is second-to-none, Evolution Edges has made us both very competitive and profitable," said Adam Caron of Wrights Trailers. "We followed salesman Calvin Garner to Evolution Edges after his departure from one of their competitors and haven't looked back. We look forward to doing business with Evolution Edges for many years to come."

At this point in the winter season, we can imagine your plows have had a lot of general wear. Have you checked your plow components recently to see what condition they are in? External factors such as amount of time a plow is used, the condition and type of ground surface, and the material grade of the cutting edge can all affect the lifetime of the wear parts.

Tips for Routine Maintenance Checks:
  • Frequently inspect to see that cutting edges are aligned properly to avoid uneven wear and poor scraping performance.

  • To protect the structural integrity of your plow, make sure the plow frame isn't exposed and there is no rubbing on the moldboard.

  • Check plow shoes and replace when worn at or below 1/4-inch thick.

  • Don't forget to inspect bolts for any that may be missing, loose or corroded. After the first 10 hours of operation, all nuts should be checked with a torque wrench to maintain proper specification.

Should you find there to be an issue with any of your plow's components, we can help get you back on the road quickly and safely. Capabilities1Earlier this winter season, Evolution Edges began a collaboration with Capabilities, a not-for-profit organization that empowers individuals with disabilities through employment opportunities. Workers at Capabilities have been meticulous in sorting, bagging, and boxing hardware kits for Evolution Edges. Upon completion, each hardware kit is placed inside crates with their respective snow plow wear parts orders, and then shipped all over the country among snow-falling states.  The sense of pride and attention to detail the workers have dedicated to this project has been greatly appreciated by everyone at Evolution Edges. The effort to neatly package these kits has been well-received among Evolution Edges customers also, as it makes installation of new wear parts an organized and simplified process.

Both Evolution Edges and Capabilities are located in Elmira, NY so this collaboration hasn’t just supported the local economy but it also has assisted in creating more viable opportunities for people who don’t want their disabilities to limit their career goals.  “We are excited to be working with Evolution Edges as a new customer,” said Aj Kircher, Executive Director at Capabilities. “Each new partnership contributes to our double bottom line of job creation and revenue to support our mission. We look forward to our continued partnership.”

Capabilities has been operating in Elmira, New York since 1955. The idea for this organization came from the concern of community members who saw persons with disabilities not being employed due to impairments related to their disability. With their recent collaboration with Evolution Edges, and many other companies within the surrounding area, the prospect of continuing to help individuals with disabilities get experience and job opportunities is looking bright within the community.

On December 10, 2019, the Business Journal News Network presented Marc Stemerman of Chemung Supply Corporation, a Business Innovation Award for his company’s commitment to innovation within their snow plow parts manufacturing division, Evolution Edges.

The award was given as part of the Central New York Family Business Awards, recognizing individuals and families that commit to carrying on family business legacies through hard work, countless hours, and thoughtful planning. The theme of the event focused on the slogan, “Behind the success of every business, there is a family.”  Chemung Supply Corporation has been a multi-generational family run business for 88 years, originally founded by siblings David and Fanny Snowiss, then later under the helm of Jerry and Myra Stemerman, and now their son Marc.

Chemung Supply has grown into one of the largest highway distribution companies in the Northeastern United States. In 2009, under the guidance of Marc Stemerman the manufacturing division Evolution Edges was formed to meet the needs of the highway plow business. Evolution Edges specializes in both innovation and customer service, and has grown from a modest 5,000 square foot facility, to 35,000 square feet, with two shifts and 32 employees. A commitment to innovation has always been a priority, and blades are manufactured utilizing the latest technology to ensure a modern, high performance operation that is used to produce winter wear products. Stemerman humbly accepted the Business Innovation award, sharing with the audience his sincere appreciation for the dedicated employees who work day-to-day to ensure quality-made products.

Since 1931, Chemung Supply has based its success on two guiding principles, and they are both focused on relationships.  The first is relationships with employees. The family learned early on that aside from their actual customers, employees were one of their biggest assets. Although the family worked tirelessly, they became aware of the shortcomings they had, and hired around those.  Stemerman stated, “Our employees are some of the most dedicated, hardworking, and smart representatives we have to carry out our philosophy of customer relationships.”  The second principle is the customer relationship. Chemung Supply’s sales force has always been available to ensure that their customers receive the solutions they are seeking. “We remain focused on these relationships and face-to-face meetings to create a more personal relationship with the customer, instead of the traditional cold environment of emails and phone calls,” added Stemerman.
