Highway departments across the country face the formidable task of maintaining safe and navigable roads during the winter months. One key aspect of achieving efficient snow removal on highways is the proper care and maintenance of snow plow blades. The cutting edge blade of a snow plow is the frontline defender against snow and ice accumulation on highways. It is crucial to recognize the impact blades have on overall plowing efficiency and road safety.

Here are some key tips to consider:

  1. Choose the Right Plow Blade Material:
Selecting the appropriate material is paramount. High-quality materials such as carbide or hardened steel offer superior durability and resistance to wear. Investing in durable cutting edges ensures longevity and reduces the frequency of replacements, contributing to cost-effectiveness.

  2. Match Plow Blade to Road Surface:
Different road surfaces may require specific types of plow blades. Consider the composition of the highways under your jurisdiction – asphalt, concrete, or gravel – and choose blades that are designed to minimize damage to the road while effectively removing snow and ice.

  3. Regular Inspection Protocols:
Establish a comprehensive inspection routine for snow plow blades. Regularly check for signs of wear, damage, or uneven wear patterns. Inspections should be conducted both before the winter season begins and at regular intervals during the season to identify potential issues early on.

  4. Monitor Plowing Conditions:
Adjust plow blade maintenance based on prevailing plowing conditions. Heavy, wet snow, or prolonged use may accelerate wear, necessitating more frequent inspections and potential replacements. Stay attuned to weather forecasts and adjust your maintenance schedule accordingly.

  5. Implement a Preventive Maintenance Program:
Develop and implement a preventive maintenance program for plow blades. Regularly replace plow blades as part of routine maintenance, even if visible wear is not immediately apparent. This proactive approach ensures that they are always in optimal condition.

How often should you change snow plow blades?

Determining the frequency of blade replacements is crucial for maintaining efficient snow removal operations. While the ideal replacement interval can vary based on factors such as climate, snowfall frequency, and road conditions, here are some general guidelines:

  1. Seasonal Replacements:
As a standard practice, consider replacing traditional cutting edges at least once per season. This can help mitigate wear and tear caused by consistent use throughout the winter months. Some blades, such as our Sabre armored carbide blade, have a longer wear life, so this is a case-by-case basis.

  2. Mid-Season Inspections:
Conduct mid-season inspections to assess the condition of plow blades. If significant wear is observed, consider replacing the blades at this point to ensure optimal performance for the remainder of the season.

  3. Adjust Based on Usage:
The frequency of blade replacements should be adjusted based on the intensity of use. Highways experiencing heavy snowfall or those with more frequent plowing requirements may necessitate more frequent replacements to maintain peak efficiency.

  4. Prioritize Safety:
Prioritize safety considerations when determining the replacement frequency. If plow blades show signs of excessive wear that compromise their effectiveness, it is crucial to replace them promptly to avoid compromising road safety.

Effective snow removal on highways demands meticulous attention to snow plow blade maintenance. It is important to prioritize choosing the right materials, implement regular inspections, and establish a proactive maintenance program. By adhering to these snow plow blade tips and tailoring the replacement frequency to specific conditions, you can ensure that your snow plow fleets operate at peak efficiency, keeping highways safe and accessible throughout the winter months.

As a result of Chemung Supply Corporation acquiring Built Blades, Evolution Edges (a Division of Chemung Supply) has carried over two Built Blades employees to its company.

Matt Aquino, founder of Built Blades and inventor of the Sabre® armored carbide snowplow blade, joins us with over 10 years of industry experience. In 2018, his Built Blades Sabre® blade was awarded both a fully issued Utility Patent and Registered Trademark.

Bruce Nichols has also joined Evolution Edges as Territory Manager, with over 40 years of extensive snow plowing experience. For 30 of those years Bruce worked at the state-level within the industry. In addition to being well-versed in plow blades and general snow & ice knowledge, he also specializes in safety education and salt brine technologies.

We are honored to have them as part of our company!

In the 1990s, the introduction of a carbide insert blade for snowplow cutting edges was recognized as a major technological advancement for the wear parts industry. Carbide demonstrated the wear longevity to be seven times greater than a traditional hardened steel snowplow blade.

While carbide represented a significant advancement, there remained the need to use a traditional cover blade to protect the car-bide inserts that would experience an initial, significant and direct impact. While the carbide longevity was an improvement, requiring two blades represented safety challenges for the installation by workers and additional stress on the truck assembly and plow frame.

Fast-forward to November 2020 when Evolution Edges announced a revolutionary one-of-a-kind solution to eliminate the traditional full-size steel cover blade, and did this by acquiring the patented Sabre® Blade System created by Built Blades LLC of Fairport, N.Y. For the first time in 30 years, the Sabre® design has created significant advancements for customers looking to improve carbide cutting edge performance. Below are Sabre’s safety, economic and functional advantages:

  • Offered on national cooperative agreements, such as NASPO and Sourcewell.
  • First manufacturer ever to use Hardox® steel in the cutting edge industry.
  • Hardox is two times more abrasion-resistant and three times more impact-resistant.
  • A Sabre blade is 40% lighter per foot to reduce work-related injuries.
  • Utilizes a 18% thinner blade surface contact, resulting in better scraping.
  • Wear indicators every inch across the blade allow for rapid visual assessment.
  • Multiple state departments of transportation evaluations demonstrate a three times greater longevity versus carbide.

Evolution Edges, located in Elmira, N.Y., opened its doors in 2009 as a division of Chemung Supply Corporation — a municipal distribution supplier that has been in operation for 90 years now. Chemung Supply President Marc Stemerman created the snowplow wear parts manufacturing division in response to following industry needs:

  • To simplify and streamline the snowplow wear parts ordering process.
  • To ensure high-quality products be delivered with rapid response.
  • To be the authority of quality and innovative snowplow cutting edges.
  • Evolution Edges has six patents pending or in existence, and along with Built Blades, both companies represent many rapid, new innovations via shared patents.

“We are confident that adding Built Blades to our portfolio will be a mutually beneficial acquisition for both companies’ customer base. Adding Built Blades products to the products offered by Evolution Edges will create a much broader product offering and the means to serve our municipal customers more effectively now and moving for-ward,” stated Stemerman.

Built Blades created the Sabre® armored carbide snowplow blade in 2016, and it has been awarded both a fully issued utility patent and a registered trademark. It is currently being used in 29 snow states across the USA, which demonstrates its worthiness in diverse climates for snowplow applications.

“Delivery of an affordable, innovative and quality snowplow wear parts portfolio in a rapid and efficient manner to the customer is our goal. The acquisition of Built Blades demonstrates our ongoing focus to improve snowplow cutting edge technology,” said Stemerman.
